redhot poker

Kniphofia Moench

A genus overview; characteristics vary between its species.

Kniphofia plants build their display from below ground: a thick rhizome and fleshy, fibrous roots support the seasonal growth. Some species divide into substantial clumps, while others remain relatively solitary. Most lack an obvious above-ground trunk, though a few develop a short stem as they age. Their long, tapering leaves usually arch outward from the base. SANBI PlantZAfrica: Kniphofia species

Botanical name

Kniphofia is an accepted genus in Asphodelaceae. The name redhot poker encompasses multiple species rather than one uniformly coloured garden plant. Kew POWO: Kniphofia

Recognizing the plant

The flowers are gathered on an upright, unbranched stalk, often with the strongest colour toward the tip of the cluster. This can create the familiar two-tone poker effect. Each flower has a tubular perianth with short spreading lobes. Six stamens reach the mouth or extend beyond it, and the slender style projects farther after the flower opens. Dry, three-angled capsules follow, containing numerous flattened seeds, sometimes with wings. NSW Flora Online: Kniphofia

Native range

The genus is centred in Africa, especially southern Africa, with species in Madagascar and Yemen. South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal is particularly rich in species; diversity generally decreases northward. Native habitats and moisture requirements vary across this broad range.
