Meet the plants behind the designs

The collection

Plants worth remembering

Choose a shirt inspired by the flowers and foliage that connect a garden with insects. This collection brings together milkweed, beebalm, coneflower, aster, blackeyed Susan and turtlehead. Their relationships differ: some flowers offer nectar or attract visitors, while some leaves feed caterpillars. Explore the plants as you compare the designs.

A closer look

Choosing your botanical shirt

Start with a plant the gardener already grows. Butterfly milkweed and New England aster make natural starting points for someone who watches butterflies; scarlet beebalm and eastern purple coneflower suit someone drawn to flower visitors. For a gardener interested in caterpillars, white turtlehead has a documented relationship with Baltimore checkerspot larvae, while blackeyed Susan is a recorded food plant for silvery checkerspot and bordered patch caterpillars.

A flower visitor, a nectar source and a larval host describe different relationships. A visiting insect is not automatically evidence of effective pollination. The Plant Library keeps those distinctions with sources for each species. These are botanical shirt designs to enjoy and give; buying one is not a claim of habitat restoration or a donation.
